3. Conclusions
The production of table grapes in Mexico and United States is concentrated in
Sonora and California, respectively. Production in California is concentrated in the
valleys of Coachella and San Joaquin. Hermosillo and Caborca are the leading
districts in Sonora for table grapes. In both states, production regions are arid, and
their ecosystems present fragilities due to chronic water shortages
vis-à-vis
overwhelming requirements for agricultural produce.
On average, Sonora obtains less than one fifth of table grapes in terms of physical
output, compared to California. The area in Sonora is approximately two fifths
vis-
à-vis
California, while yields are less than one half. In spite of the relative lackluster
yield performance in Sonora, prices are more than two-fold, compared to those in
California. In terms of dollars adjusted for inflation, value per hectare exposes a
similar gap to the advantage of Sonora.
