Despite the output growth per hectare in Sonora, its maximum yield
attained, i.e. 18.7 tons/ha, is similar to the minimum level registered in California
(18.3 tons per hectare).
Exceptionally, California has reached 28.3 tons per hectare, while its median is
22.9 tons per hectare. As yields continue to grow in California at a lower rate
i.e.
2.7% annual average, Sonora appears to have a long way to go move closer to the
efficiency of California in table grape production. For instance, the median yield in
California is over twice the one exposed by Sonora. The coefficient of variation in
table grape yield in Sonora is substantially higher (0.24) than in California (0.12).
Maintaining aquifer overexploitation without specific programs targeting higher
yields, particularly in the case of lagging Sonora, would appear difficult to justify.

The average output value of Sonora grapes is 237.4 million dollars of 2013 (Table
