In order to make
homogeneous comparisons for both regions, yearly data from 1995 to 2013 is
taken as a basis
Before a comparison is made between table grape production in Sonora and
California regarding the set of variables, its plausibility is to be verified. For this
purpose, cointegration tests are performed regarding each of the variables
examined. That is to say, output, area, yield, value, value per hectare and price, in
each case between both states. The results are reported in the section five of the
Appendices, where the routine followed is reported. In every single instance, a
long-term relation was confirmed. This provides the ground for the following
analysis. No tests were performed for bi-national wages due to lack of data
available throughout time.

For the time span under consideration, the BLS does not provide a deflator for
grapes differentiating whether the fruit is consumed in fresh, or whether the fruit is
subject to an industrial transformation.

For previous years, no distinction is made by Mexican data regarding the use of
grape production. For instance, whether it is processed to obtain wine, for
distillation, dehydration or for raisin production or, plainly, table grapes.
